To avoid a steady reduction in living standards we therefore need to reduce costs by spending more wisely and using our resources in a more clever way. Luckily there are many ways that we can reduce how much we spend at the same time as eating better food and maintaining the comfort levels in our homes. The added benefit is that we live in a more sustainable way and become less dependent on government and big business.

For the past nine years we have worked to make our life at Culgower House more cost-effective and sustainable. We have dramatically reduced the amount of the energy that we use for heating, hot water and electricity. 30% of our total energy is now from sustainable sources. We grow our own fruit and vegetables and are self-sufficient in eggs and pork. We now save over £5,000 a year compared with what we would be spending if we had done nothing and just continued to pay the rising costs of everything.

	Where are we based? We are located in beautiful and sustainable-energy-rich Northern Scotland. Culgower House is just off the A9 road, 102 km north of Inverness which is well-served by sleeper trains or domestic flights. Driving from Inverness to Culgower House takes just over an hour, whereas the train takes nearer two hours.
